Mr. Spear joined Chindex in 1997 and is responsible for sales and marketing of medical consumables, low-priced medical equipment, and health-related consumer products carried by Chindex, which are sold for local currency via a network of independent Chinese distributors and in retail pharmacies. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and has more than fifteen years of business experience on the ground in China. Prior to joining Chindex, Mr. Spear was a principal of his own trade representation and distribution firm in China from 1990-96. Main activities included organizing local dealer sales of a range of scientific and consumer products. He was vice president and chief representative in Beijing with Unison International during the years 1986-90. Mr. Spear has been an invited speaker on China logistics and distribution issues at trade and industry conferences conducted by such organizations as the Economist Conferences, Institute of International Relations, U.S.-China Business Council, and World Economic Forum. He earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
Mr. Sheng has been with Chindex since 1988, initially as a biomedical field service engineer for national accounts. In the early 1990s he assumed the role of Assistant Manager and then Manager of the Technical Service Department. In 1993 he joined the Medical Department as an Assistant Manager, progressing over the period to the positions of Manager, Director and now Vice President. Mr. Sheng graduated from university in the 1980�s with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. He is a native of the city of Guangzhou, speaks fluent Mandarin and Cantonese dialects.
During the 1990s Mr. Hofmann served Chindex as Administrative Director, China Operations, led the development team that established and built the Beijing United Family Hospital and served as the General Manager of Chindex Hong Kong Ltd. Prior to his time with Chindex, Mr. Hofmann worked for Chrysler Motors Corporation as a China Business Development Specialist with responsibility for various projects associated with the Beijing Jeep joint venture as well as in the Textile industry in production and logistics. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and has served as Vice President of Programs and Activities for the American Chamber of Commerce, Beijing as well as a past Chairman of the China Business Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. Mr. Hofmann holds a BA from Michigan State University and an MBA from Columbia University Graduate School of Business.
